    Hydrilla Control at High-Profile Resort
Aquatic Weed and Algae Control Case Study

    Location and Acreage:
    Charlottesville, VA | 2.4-Acres

    Project Timeframe:

    Project Manager:
Shannon Junior, Aquatic Ecologist and Senior Business Development Consultant

    Site Description:
This property is a high-profile resort and conference center and they have very high standards for the aesthetics of the ponds. There are two waterbodies on the property, which are centrally located among the facilities and can be viewed from the exclusive restaurant and spa area. The ponds are a management challenge due to several nuisance aquatic species and heavy use of the water for irrigation of turf and ornamental vegetation on the property. They also flow downstream to a golf course, and we have been asked to avoid using herbicides with any irrigation restrictions.

    Scope of Work:
    Hydrilla control

Hydrilla Infested Pond    After Controling and Treating Hydrilla

    Project Description:
We received a notification in August of 2016 that the upper pond was experiencing a severe hydrilla bloom, and we observed that the plants were topped out throughout most of the waterbody. There was an extremely high-profile wedding scheduled in early September that was to take place on the hillside overlooking the pond, so a quick resolution of the bloom was needed. Based on the irrigation water use and the need for fast results, we performed an aggressive treatment of the lower half of the pond using low does systemic herbicide. We returned to the pond two weeks later for a follow-up treatment and found that we had achieved good control of most of the vegetation in the pond. We treated the remaining vegetation with the same product, and were able to bring the bloom under control. The pond looked great for the wedding, which went off without a hitch.
