    Duckweed Control in Tennessee Pond
Aquatic Weed and Algae Control Case Study

    Location and Acreage:
    Brentwood, TN | .33-Acres

    Project Timeframe:

    Project Manager:
    Clay Stabely, Aquatic Specialist

    Site Description:
The client contacted SOLitude looking for a solution to an aesthetic issue with his pond. He had been dealing with duckweed growth over the past few seasons, and had seen the problem steadily become worse. As a private landowner, he had some budget concerns and wanted to keep costs at a minimum. After an initial site visit, we were able to get a comprehensive picture of the waterbody, including vegetation concentration, flow, and treatment history.

Duckweed and Filamentous Algae Bloom After Treatment of Filamentous Algae Bloom and Duckweed

    Scope of Work:
Control heavy growth of duckweed covering nearly 75% of the surface of the pond, and late season filamentous algae bloom without compromising dissolved oxygen levels.

    Project Description:
Treatment was suggested for the control of the duckweed, due to the overall ease of treatment and the ability to keep labor costs down. An EPA registered aquatic herbicide was applied and another product applied at maintenance rate. One product was applied via the scoop and toss method while the other applications were made with a backpack sprayer. The weather during treatment was 95 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny, with low wind and humidity. After the initial treatment, we made routine visits over the course of the next month to monitor the efficacy of the treatment and to see how the vegetation was reacting. Within about a month’s time, the duckweed issue was solved in the pond.

Later in the year, during the time of fall turnover, filamentous algae began to bloom in shallow areas of the pond, mainly near the outflow and around the shoreline. The environmentally sensitive aquatic product was used in a series of maintenance dose treatments to control the algae bloom with the first treatment, and then to fully eradicate it with the second treatment visit.

Overall, the client was very pleased with the results and the communication involved throughout the process, and signed an annual maintenance contract following the treatment.
