    Controlling Invasive Weeds in a Large Lake

    Site Description:
    The lake is an inland lake in the Roanoke area of Virginia with 20,260 surface acres of water and over 500 miles of shoreline. The lake was created in 1963 as a hydro-power generation facility, and is a popular recreation area with a trophy striped bass fishery. Hydrilla, Brazilian elodea and curly-leaf pondweed have become established in the lake, and long-term management activities have been implemented.

    Invasive Aquatic Vegetation Map

    Scope of Work:
    Consulting Services, Lake Weed Identification and Mapping, Post-Treatment Monitoring, Long-Term Invasive Weed Management Plan, Tuber Study Protocol Development, Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (VPDES) Coordination (including Integrated Pest Management Plan and Pesticide Discharge Management Plan development), Aquatic Vegetation Survey, Triploid Grass Carp Management Plan Development.

    Project Description:
    SOLitude Lake Management has served as the primary consultant for control of the invasive weeds Hydrilla verticillata, Egeria densa and Potamogeton crispus. SOLitude performed vegetation mapping of the most heavily infested areas of the lake to characterize the location, size, and density of invasive vegetation blooms, and also collected bathymetric data in the mapped areas. 

    Based on the information collected, our firm developed a long-term management plan for the invasive vegetation and has assisted with implementation of the plan. Additional consulting tasks have included the development of a tuber study protocol to assess the effectiveness of herbicide treatments, VPDES Program coordination for aquatic pesticide applications, and the creation of a triploid grass carp management plan to minimize vegetation management costs. SOLitude also performed a point-intercept survey of the entire shoreline of the lake to monitor the potential spread of vegetation throughout the lake.
