SOLitude Donates Pond Maintenance Services to Camp Holiday Trails

SOLitude Lake Management, an industry leader in lake and pond management, fisheries management and related environmental services for the United States, coordinated the donation of over $4,500 in products and services in 2015 for the maintenance of the recreational pond at Camp Holiday Trails, a camp for children with special health needs. The pond management program at Camp Holiday Trails continues annually as part of SOLitude’s outreach and sustainability program, The SOLution.

SOLitude’s restoration of the pond at Camp Holiday Trails began in 2013, and involved installation of a submersed aeration system and treatment of the nuisance aquatic plant, watermeal. Since then, the lake and pond management company has continued to donate their time to maintaining the aquatic ecosystem so that it remains safe for campers to use. Donated services by SOLitude last year included maintenance of the aeration system as well as treatment of duckweed, an invasive aquatic plant, using herbicide produced by industry partner SePRO Corporation.

Camp Holiday Trails offers children with special and chronic health needs a fun, safe and medically-supervised camp experience. Approximately 94 percent of the campers receive financial aid to attend camp. Camp Holiday Trail’s pond, located near the entrance of the camp, welcomes children to their camp experience and enables them to enjoy therapeutic activities such as canoeing, swimming and fishing.

“Our struggle with duckweed not only endangered our aquatic life, but also jeopardized our camper’s ability to fully experience the pond. With so many of them coming from urban areas, the exposure to a natural body of water with safe access is rare. We are deeply thankful for the commitment and vigilance of SOLitude Lake Management in bringing back a healthy pond and helping to maintain this important natural and programmatic feature to our Camp,” said Tina LaRoche, Executive Director of Camp Holiday Trails.

The pond at Camp Holiday Trails was chosen for restoration through SOLitude’s Love Your Lake program—a part of their outreach and sustainability program, The SOLution.
