Why is fountain and aeration system maintenance important?

Fountains and aerators are designed to operate continuously 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which opens them up to encountering operational issues. Because they constantly pull water in and push it out, they can easily suck up floating debris, leaves, and trash, which can lead to clogged screens or blocked internal components. Regular checks ensure that protective screens are cleared before a full clog occurs and that moving components are inspected by a trained professional to keep the equipment running exactly as it is supposed to.

How often should a fountain or surface aerator have an oil and seal change?

Most equipment vendors do not recommend performing oil and seal changes while the unit is still within its initial warranty period. However, once the two-, three-, or five-year warranty period has expired, having an oil and seal change performed typically once every three years is sufficient to maintain the system. It is also important to budget for a full system replacement after about 10 years, as this is the general lifespan for these types of aeration systems.

Should fountains and aerators be removed during winter?

Winterization needs depend heavily on geographic location and the type of system being used. For floating fountains and surface aerators located south of the Mason-Dixon line, winter removal is generally unnecessary, but in northern regions where water bodies freeze solid for a month or more, these floating units should be pulled from the water around November to protect them from the ice. Conversely, compressor diffuser systems keep their working parts on the shoreline, meaning they can remain active through northern winters to safely produce oxygen under the ice, though they will create thin spots in the ice that make it unsafe for people to walk on.

What are some common reasons a fountain or aeration system may be underperforming?

Underperformance is most commonly caused by physical blockages, such as leaves, trash, or aquatic vegetation getting stuck on the intake screen or passing through to jam the internal impeller. Another frequent cause of poor performance stems from electrical issues within the control panel. If internal components or circuit breakers are repeatedly tripping, it is a clear sign that the equipment is either suffering from an electrical short or drawing too many amps, both of which require a technician to diagnose and resolve.
