How do floating fountains function, and what are their benefits?
A floating fountain uses an electric motor to propel water into the air, creating a decorative spray pattern that enhances the aesthetic of a water body. Beyond their appearance, these fountains provide vital supplemental aeration by splashing water back onto the surface, which increases dissolved oxygen levels and helps resolve issues with stagnant water. This process is highly beneficial for the overall health of the aquatic ecosystem and the environment.
What size lake or pond works best for floating fountains if improving oxygen levels is the goal?
There is virtually no limit to the size of a water body where a fountain can be beneficial, as they have been successfully used in ponds as small as a tenth of an acre. While a minimum operating depth of a few feet is required, floating fountains can be anchored in very deep water, even up to 120 feet, using long anchor lines.
Are there different spray patterns? Can I change the spray pattern after installation?
Many manufacturers offer fountain packages that include multiple spray patterns; for example, the Kasco J Series comes with six options that can be alternated. While some brands require a pattern to be selected ahead of time, many vendors allow for a no-charge nozzle exchange within the first three to six months if the client is unhappy with their initial choice.
What horsepower options are available?
Horsepower options typically range from 0.5 HP to 5 HP for standard platforms, but specialized fountains can go as high as 10, 15, or even 25 HP for very large displays. For larger water bodies, it is often more economical for the end user to install multiple 5 HP fountains rather than one massive unit, though high-horsepower fountains remain an option for those seeking an impressive display.
Can floating fountains include lighting features? What are some options available?
Floating fountains offer numerous lighting options ranging from 11 watts up to 77 watts for bright displays on large fountains far from shore. Systems can include between two and eight lights, with options for standard white, fixed colors, or RGBW color-changing sets. These color-changing lights often feature preset patterns for holidays or can be adjusted by the client via remote control.
Why is it important to have the right size fountain in my lake or pond?
Proper sizing is critical for maintaining dissolved oxygen levels, which fish need to survive, especially during the summer when hotter water holds less oxygen and fish kills can occur. A correctly sized fountain can maintain oxygen levels high enough to support aquatic life even in extreme heat, effectively preventing devastating fish kills by providing a refuge where thousands of fish can cohabit safely.
How can I get a floating fountain in my lake or pond?
To install a floating fountain, a dedicated electrical circuit with the correct voltage and amp draw must be available for the equipment to operate properly. An electrician is typically required to run underground wires from a main panel to within 30 feet of the shoreline so the fountain’s control panel can be connected.
