Muck and Algae Control In Golf Course Pond
Aquatic Weed and Algae Control Case Study

    Location and Acreage:
    Vero Beach, FL | .5-Acres

    Project Timeframe:

    Project Managers:
    Anthony Oraczewski, Assistant Territory Leader

    Site Description:
This golf club is a private golf course in Vero Beach, Florida consisting of fifteen lakes. The main problem lake on the property is just less than half an acre in size, and is fed by an artesian well to keep the water levels constant. While the water quality is excellent, there is a two-inch layer of muck. This muck, in conjunction with warm temperatures and shallow water, caused constant algae (cyanobacteria) blooms. SOLitude needed something that would work quickly due to flow issues and to improve the aesthetics of the lake for the club members.

Muck and Algae Developing On Shoreline After Treatment of Muck and Cyanobacteria

    Scope of Work:
Control of resistant algae and cyanobacteria

    Project Description:
After many failed treatment attempts in February, we tried using a combination of products in March which also ended in no results. We then tried a low does systemic herbicide in April with two follow up treatments at two-week intervals. After the first treatment, the growth was reduced by 50%. Following the second treatment there was only 20% coverage, and two weeks after the final treatment the lake was clean and remained clear for nearly two months. The results were amazing considering the summer heat, constant flow, and the lake is being fed with well water. Since the initial treatments with the environmentally sensitive aquatic product, the lake has remained virtually clear—only an occasional spot treatment around the edge has been needed.
