    Performing Hypolimnetic Alum Treatment

    Site Description:
For the initial project, SOLitude was part of consultant/contractor team which included, ENSR International of Westford, MA and CH2M Hill of Boston, MA. This team worked closely with the Air Force, the Mashpee Conservation Commission and their consultant to design and perform a hypolimnetic alum treatment at the pond. This property is a low-alkalinity waterbody and a popular trout fishery. The waterbody has been receiving phosphorus loading from a nearby groundwater plume for many years. This treatment was included as part of a remediation project.
Another phase of work was completed in 2010 to treat additional areas of the pond bottom and apply an additional of alum to previously treated areas.

    Scope of Work:
    Nutrient Inactivation

    Project Description:
Approximately 28 acres of the 216-acre lake were scheduled for treatment. This proposed area encompassed all of the typically anoxic waters in the lake with depths of 40 feet or greater. SOLitude specially designed a spray boom system that would apply the chemical at a depth of 35 feet. To our knowledge, this is the deepest hypolimnetic injection system ever designed and used successfully to apply alum. The treatment was successfully carried out by SOLitude in the Fall of 2001 along with extensive monitoring and evaluation by several parties. The 2010 treatment was conducted as a “surface” application to a total area of about 40 acres.
