Improving Water Quality At Golf Course Lake
Aquatic Weed and Algae Control Case Study

    Location and Acreage:
    Williamsburg, VA | 2.75-Acres

    Project Timeframe:
    May 2019

    Project Manager:
Chase Brown, Aquatic Biologist and District Manager

    Site Description:
This golf course is located in Williamsburg, Virginia. Their in-house maintenance team has historically struggled to manage water quality in their lakes. The lake frequently grew filamentous algae blooms and struggled with muck buildup which was becoming an eye-sore to players.

    Scope of Work:
During the 2018 season, SOLitude won an annual management contract for all four lakes. Within the first few treatments, SOLitude had every lake in great shape and the property avoided what they called a “yearly fish kill.” Due to budget concerns, the city canceled the contract for 2019 season.

However, during the first few months of spring in 2019, there was continuous algae growth due to a lack of ongoing management. The golf course went to the city and asked for them to reconsider the lake management budget due to the lake’s poor water quality. The city granted them the budget and they reached back out to SOLitude for management services.

    Project Description:
The first day involved treating approximately 1/3 of the algae with an environmentally-friendly product using a mule with a 50-gallon spray tank. On day three, we again treated small areas of decay (the rest of the algae was brown and unhealthy looking). We shut off the water to reduce flow for 7 days post-treatment. In total, we used 10.5 gallons of the product to treat the waterbody.

After one week, 90% of the algae were gone. Follow up treatments around the dam and coves were performed where some limited amounts of algae remained. After 10 days, 100% control of algae was achieved.

The client was extremely pleased that SOLitude was able to once again restore balance their waterbodies, removing the eyesore of algae-filled water for players and keeping their lakes functioning properly. Moving forward, the city has budgeted for SOLitude to come out and treat the lakes a couple of times a year due to the latest results.
