Water Quality Testing in Recreational Pond
    Water Quality Case Study

    Location and Acreage:
    Erie, PA | 6.9-Acres

    Project Timeframe:
    2015 to present

    Project Manager:
Shannon Junior, Aquatic Ecologist and Senior Business Development Consultant

    Key Staff:
    Hunter Poland, Environmental Scientist

    Site Description:
This private residence pond is a 6.9-acre private waterbody near Erie, PA. The client was experiencing ongoing issues with algae growth. The pond is used for fishing, kayaking, and swimming and the algae growth was making these activities nearly impossible. Prior to contacting SOLitude, the client tried implementing many strategies to discourage the growth including aeration and aquatic dye, but nothing helped. In 2015, we were contacted to find a solution to the issue.

Algae Bloom at Private Residence    Full Control of Targeted Algae Species

    Scope of Work:
Consulting Services, Water Quality Testing, Algaecide Applications.

    Project Description:
Our first step was collecting and analyzing water, algae and sediment samples. The results confirmed that the pond was Eutrophic and had high phosphorous levels in the sediment. The algae results identified the problem species as Aphanothece stagnina sp. and Planktolyngbya sp. We then worked with the client to develop a management plan that abided by EPA and state permitting guidelines. In early July, when the algae blooms began to explode, we returned to the site to manage the growth. The following day, the pond appeared noticeably clearer. Within two weeks, the pond was completely clear of algae and full control of the target algae species had been achieved.

We were able to maintain excellent control through 2016. In 2017, we continued to visit the pond twice per month as part of the client’s annual maintenance plan. In July of 2017, we identified some new algae growth of Aphanothece stagnia sp. beginning to re-emerge, so we proactively treated this and were able to re-establish full balance.
