This community pond in Broomfield, CO, is located adjacent to a new development as well as a popular open space trail system. This pond is assumed to be an old stock pond that is now used as a stormwater management facility for the newly constructed community. The pond is overlooked by several houses and receives complaints when it begins to experience nuisance algal blooms.
Scope of Work:
The pond is extremely shallow and is only 1-3 feet in depth throughout and shows poor water quality with high levels of nutrients. In previous years, the pond experienced about 80% coverage with pond weed and then filamentous algae began to grow on top.
In 2019, SOLitude performed three applications of an environmentally-friendly product beginning in April and continuing monthly to early-June. The spring treatments succeeded in suppressing vegetation growth through early summer.
In mid-June, after an extended period of hot, calm weather, the pond became about 75% covered with filamentous algae. Another EPA-approved product was applied using a backpack sprayer from a boat. Excellent coverage was achieved.
Upon returning two weeks after the treatment, 100% control was achieved. A follow-up inspection in mid-July confirmed that we are currently maintaining control and the lake is free from surface algae. Both the property manager and the residents surrounding the stormwater pond are extremely happy to now have a beautiful aquatic ecosystem as part of their community.
