Volunteer of the Year Embodies SOLitude Lake Management's Core Values

by: SOLitude Lake Management   |   Jan 21, 2014

Through its corporate volunteering program, The SOLution, SOLitude Lake Management, named Shannon Junior, Aquatic Ecologist, Volunteer of the Quarter for Fourth Quarter of 2013 and Volunteer of the Year.

Shannon Junior VOL of the Year The SOLution 2013 bShannon received the Volunteer of the Year award for her year round commitment to her philanthropic passions, and her enthusiasm for seeking out new opportunities for SOLitude to help others. In 2013, Shannon spent over 288 hours helping organizations such as the Madison County Animal Shelter with adoption events and at their fundraisers to include Canine and Wine, Dog Dayz Chili Fest, Lake of the Woods Dogfest, and Dogapalooza. She also encouraged her colleagues to join her in “creating a better world” by attending several team volunteering events including the Family and Youth Casting Call, Heritage Day and Watershed Day at Graves Mountain Lodge and Food for Others.

Shannon was excited to be named Volunteer of the Year and directed a donation of $1475, on behalf of SOLitude Lake Management and The SOLution, to the Madison-Greene Humane Society. She said, “I am extremely grateful to Kevin (Tucker) and SOLitude for being so supportive of my 'second job'.” She also noted that the awarded donation to the shelter was allocated to the spay/neuter account to subsidize adoption costs and to start a Trap-Neuter-Release Program for feral cats. “The SOLution Program has made a direct impact on the homeless pets in Madison County, and is bringing us closer to our goal of achieving No-Kill status in 2014!” she concluded.

In 2013, Shannon also spearheaded the restoration of the swimming and fishing lake at Camp Holiday Trails, a camp for children with special and chronic health needs, in Charlottesville, VA. As project manager for the lake restoration, she coordinated the effort for SOLitude, and also organized donations from AquaMaster Fountains and Aerators and Valent Professional Products. For 2014, Shannon has already organized monthly team volunteer events with Food for Others, scheduled her team to participate in the annual Family and Youth Casting Call in Washington, DC, and will continue to frequently invite, and secure other team members to join her at Madison County Animal Shelter events.

In addition to her continuous weekend volunteer efforts for the Madison County Animal Shelter, she also created her own fundraiser, making and selling t-shirts and doggie bandanas where 100 percent of the proceeds are donated directly to her local animal shelter. https://www.etsy.com/shop/DogDayzDyes.

Kevin Tucker, owner of SOLitude Lake Management, shared his thoughts at the December holiday party and awards presentation, “Shannon is a true inspiration to our entire staff. Not only does she go above and beyond to ensure her team is productive, her clients are happy and their lakes and ponds are as healthy as could be, but she makes the time to coordinate team volunteering events throughout the year and volunteers on her own almost every Saturday at her local animal shelter.”

SOLution_logo_smThe SOLution is a company-wide program that encourages the company and all employees to strive to “create a better world” through volunteerism, community outreach, sustainability and environmental consciousness. SOLitude’s company leadership feels it is important to not only be good stewards of the environment and good corporate citizens, but also to fulfill company core values to “take action and be accountable” and to “protect and respect nature.” To participate or share a non-profit's goals for consideration in The SOLution, contact Tracy King at tking@solitudelake.com or visit www.solitudelakemanagement.com/solution.
