    Virginia Is for Leaders!

by: SOLitude Lake Management   |   Apr 18, 2014

AS SEEN IN Quorum, Washington Metropolitan Chapter, Community Associations Institute, April 2014: Written by Shannon Junior, Aquatic Biologist

virginia_is_for_leadersIf you have not already marked your calendar for the 2014 Virginia Leadership Retreat, or VLR, then this would be a great time to grab a pen or create a new appointment. The 6th Annual VLR will be held at The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va., from July 25-27. This unique leadership education and networking event is specifically geared toward community managers and business partners serving in the community association industry in Virginia. Our theme this year is “Virginia is for Leaders,” and while the education is not exclusive to Virginia, the advanced seminars will be tailored to address the laws, challenges and opportunities faced by those who manage communities in the Old Dominion.

In previous years, our program has been approved for eight hours of continuing education and PCAM redesignation credits and we anticipate that this will continue in 2014. Last year’s event was attended by more than 200 managers and business professionals. This time around, we are expecting the event to be even bigger and better.

The Virginia Leadership Retreat is not only an affordable and local opportunity to earn your required education credits, but it is also a fun and exciting occasion to network with other professionals in our industry. What better way is there to connect with your colleagues than by spending a morning together on the golf course, an afternoon floating on the Lazy River or an evening sipping cocktails and singing along at a porch serenade? There is never a dull moment at the VLR.

The event opens with the Welcome Reception on Friday afternoon. Saturday is filled with education sessions and includes a business lunch and a dinner banquet with amazing food and live entertainment. The event concludes Sunday morning with a round-table breakfast and manager raffle, leaving plenty of time for a leisurely return home by early afternoon. Meals are included in the conference registration fee, with one of the highlights being the most indulgent breakfast buffet imaginable—omelet and waffle stations, a wide selection of breakfast meats, fish and entrees, fresh fruit, muffins and pastries, and the famous Homestead cinnamon donuts.

the_homestead_resortWe encourage VLR participants to arrive early to take advantage of the amenities and activities offered at The Homestead. Many of our attendees bring their families and enjoy a minivacation at the resort since the negotiated room rate for the conference is available for the entire week. The newly renovated world-class spa includes a European-inspired aqua thermal suite, massages, body treatments and an adults-only Spa Garden. Other activities include trap, skeet and target shooting, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking, archery, horseback riding, paintball and many more. “Early birds” may take advantage of special VLR activities, including a “Splash-Off” Pool Party Thursday evening; a golf tournament, drink mixology classes and free miniature golf on Friday. Last year, we even had the opportunity to enjoy a falconry class sponsored by one of our business partners and who knows what will be available in 2014.

There is no better way to earn your education credits than by spending an exciting weekend at an exclusive resort with familiar colleagues and new friends. If you would like more information about the conference, e-mail the committee at vlrcommittee@gmail.com. Please be sure to “Like” the Virginia Leadership Retreat Facebook page to stay abreast on updates and announcements about the event. We hope to see you at The Homestead in July.
